I remember the first time I went overseas, it was through a program like this: a working visa exchange program with Great Britain. Unfortunately, I was still too young and inexperienced to take advantage of it: you had to just jump in there and find a job, and I had never even done that in my own country (had had the remarkable good luck of sort of just falling into jobs), let alone a foreign one, so I ended up coming home. It was also a period of great unemployment in the part of England I was in (18 percent unemployment). There was one possible job: cleaning floors in the town hospital. I kind of wish I could go back in time and take the job--it would have been a great experience.

When the Tall One took his cross country train journey, he stayed at one point in a hostel in one of the national parks out west, and the people working there were all from Moldova.
