Shagufa got her master’s at Brandeis University on Sunday. So there, Taliban!
A quick update on Shagufa Habibi of Herat, Afghanistan, a determined young woman I first wrote about here. (You can find related articles by searching on her name at this blog or on the web.)
As everybody knows, the Taliban are now running Afghanistan and are opposed to higher education — or almost any kind of education — for girls and women. Well, too bad! Shagufa spent the last two years studying at Brandeis University, and yesterday she was awarded her master’s degree.

Congratulations 🎉
Congrats, congrats! How awful is to deprive half the population of an education.
It’s really shooting yourself in the foot.
Absolutely. All the talent and energy that go to waste. Heartbreaking.
Dear Suzanne ‘s Mom,
This is me Shagufa Habibi. I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been reflecting on my journey lately, and I couldn’t go another day without expressing just how deeply grateful I am for everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for writing this blog about my graduation.
When I first arrived in the U.S., you were there—patient, kind, and unwavering. You devoted your time to helping me improve my English, guiding me through writing a powerful personal statement, and encouraging me through each draft. I still remember how generously you shared your time, offering thoughtful feedback and always believing in my potential.
Thanks to your support, I was admitted to Brandeis University—a milestone that felt impossible at one point. And it didn’t stop there. You even took the time to help me practice driving, building my confidence behind the wheel until I passed my test on the first try. Your kindness extended far beyond academics; it touched every corner of my life.
Today, I am proud to say I’m working as a Data Analyst at Crowe LLP. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without your guidance, encouragement, and unwavering belief in me. You helped shape the person I’ve become, and for that, I will always be thankful.
Your kindness is beyond words, and your impact on my life will stay with me forever.
With deepest appreciation,
Shagufa
Well, Shagufa, a lot of people helped you, including some readers of this blog, who responded to your go-fund-me. I know everyone will be glad to hear you are doing well. And someday you will follow your dream of promoting women and sports in Afghanistan. Seems impossible now, but you’re a good example of doing the impossible!
