This morning as my almost-three-year-old grandson was “fixing” the downspout with a pair of pliers, I passed along what I like about spring.

You don’t have to put on coats and scarves and boots and hats and mittens every time you go out. It’s warm and sunny. There are lots of flowers. The flowers smell good.

He didn’t say much, probably because he had already gotten me to smell a large, red tulip, and he was focused on his work.

Here are some spring pictures. Look closely to see the mural of a rabbit in the shadows at Olga’s, where our one-year-old grandson escorted us for brunch.

Help me identify the sprays of flowery branches? The only one I can say  for sure is the yellow forsythia. For the others, I will have to upload the photos at the website of the almost-three-year-old’s dad to get a crowd-sourced identification, Mister Smarty Plants. Do you think the pink spray is quince?

Since Monday, I’ve been asking people what they do for comfort, to calm themselves.

A friend who had finished the race barely in time tried staying off social media and having her friends screen news stories to find the many heartwarming, “safe” ones.

Another spent a little time wandering among flowering trees.

Another cooks. Today I’ve been making chicken soup, which can take a long time and involve lots of steps if you want it to. (Barley alone takes an hour to cook.)

A third friend has been dropping off to sleep at night looking at happy family photos.

That sounds like another good idea.

I was in Providence for a work event this morning, setting out early to miss the traffic.

I got to walk around a bit, and I’m going to show you my photos. If you are wondering why I took the first one, it’s because it reminds me of a song in Guys and Dolls, one of my favorite shows. Do you know the “Fugue for Tinhorns,” in which harmonic gamblers bemoan the lack of a location for “the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York”?

It goes: “So the Biltmore garage is the spot. / But the one thousand bucks we ain’t got.”

Everyone is getting ready for Thanksgiving around here. John’s family has left for Syracuse to join culinary forces with my daughter-in-law’s family. My husband and I just arrived in Providence, where we will celebrate with Suzanne, Erik, my sister, and my brother-in-law.

Big cooking starts early tomorrow. But I already made the From Scratch Club’s cranberry sauce that was such a hit last year. (I found it on their WordPress blog.)

So as not to repeat myself too much, I am just going to share a link John sent me that captures the leaping-for-joy spirit that should be the essence of a holiday that is basically about eating a lot of food with people you like. And then maybe taking a nap and dreaming you are flying.

Check out the wonderful pictures at http://imgur.com/a/NAwjl

This is just one.
